A new way for students to recieve high quality services
We have found that Remote speech therapy is a viable and successful option for children in need of speech and language support. The shift towards remote therapy is driven by several factors, including accessibility, convenience, and effectiveness.
One of the primary reasons for the growth in remote therapy is its accessibility. By hiring remote speech therapists, schools can provide required speech therapy services even in the most competitive markets for SLP talent. This increased accessibility helps bridge the gap between children who require therapy and the resources available to them, ensuring that more children receive the support they need to thrive.
Remote therapy can be just as effective as traditional in-person therapy for improving speech and language skills in children. The use of interactive digital tools, games, and engaging activities during remote sessions enhances the learning experience and keeps children motivated to participate actively in therapy. In our experience, students at the middle school and high school level develop authentic connections more easily with the SLP because a digital platform is a familiar outlet that they use in their everyday lives. It’s a seamless way to learn outside the classroom, communicate with friends, play games, & interact socially.
Collaboration with school staff is a key benefit of remote therapy. Remote Speech therapists can work closely with teachers and other school personnel to develop personalized treatment plans and strategies that support the child’s speech and language goals in the classroom. At the preschool and elementary levels, students will need some level of in-person support which in turn increases collaboration and carries over into the general education environment. At all levels, Speech Pathologists are able to serve as remote supervisors for Speech Therapy Assistants.
Remote therapy offers a win-win situation for both schools & therapists. Schools can enjoy flexibility in staffing & utilize a broader talent pool without being limited by geographical constraints. The ability to hire remotely can lead to improved therapy capabilities for in-house special ed teams & reduce turnover & burnout among therapists, ultimately benefiting the quality of services that students receive.
As technology continues to advance, remote therapy is poised to play an even more significant role in supporting children’s speech and language development, ensuring that every child has access to high-quality speech therapists who can give them the opportunity to communicate effectively and confidently.
